Linux resources

Here I share some experiences and information about the GNU/Linux system. Some of this information is written for myself, so that I don't forget how things work. And I think when I write things down, better try to be exhaustive and put it up on the web...

Linux on the Compaq Ipaq

I got an Ipaq for Xmas and the first thing I did (after recognizing that WinCE just doesn't fit my needs) was installing GNU/Linux on my little handheld. You have to dig a little into the docs to get all stuff running, therefor I try to create a little walkthrough for all of you out there. And me when I reinstall.

All of the documentation is written using debian/sid as desktop computer and an Ipaq 3870 device. Most of the documentation will work for other configurations, too.

  • Getting started
Where to find resources on how to get a basic familiar with opie installation on your Ipaq.
  • The Feeds
Where to get your packages from and what to install once you've got a running familiar on your ipaq.
  • Running X
How to get an X installation on an MMC card. And you'll learn how to use X from within opie. If you want to run some games that just aren't ported to opie (yet).
  • Internet via irda
You've got a mobile device, so you want to be mobile. And you have to know how to get into the internet with your mobile phone. Usually with irda (and GPRS).
  • Bluetooth
I really did lot's of experimentation before I got this one running. Here's a little step-by-step howto.

Burning VCDs on Linux

Get cdrdao, vcdimager, mjpegtools, mplayer, mencoder, transcoding (tcmplex) and mpgtx.

See this Usenet Thread on howto fix broken mpeg files. It states you should use mpgtx -d to demux and tcmplex to recreate the mpeg stream.
